The stress of unfair trade is making agriculture the most unsafe industry

Farmers For Action Northern Ireland recently met representatives from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland, HSENI, to discuss the recent serious accident statistics in relation to agriculture in Northern Ireland.

The current stats reflect agriculture as the most unsafe industry to work in with similar statistics mirrored across GB, Southern Ireland and the rest of Europe.
With this in mind Farmers For Action led by Northern Ireland co-ordinator William Taylor met with Malcolm Downey and John Spiers HSENI, to ask for their help in gathering support from HSE GB to take the case to Brussels, pointing out that a cash strapped industry can never be a safe industry!
Therefore with lives at stake, Brussels must be made stick to their fine words already uttered many times and put in place a proper ‘income safety net’ for the next CAP, also proposed by Fairness for Farmers in Europe’s (FFE’s) revolutionary CAP proposal.
William Taylor stated that, Malcolm Downey said he would raise the concerns of Farmers for Action, regarding the poor safety record of the agricultural industry, with his counterparts from HSE (GB) and the Health and Safety Authority.
A recent visit to Brussels by William Taylor on behalf of Fairness for Farmers in Europe brought it home that DG Agri and the Budget Commissioners office were of the opinion that agriculture Europe PLC was ticking along nicely, with the last income crisis being the low milk prices of 2008/9, this was soon corrected by the FFE representation, by telling it like it is; and quoting the horrific accident statistics mirrored across Europe, not forgetting suicides in agricultural particularly in France, running at 300+ farmers per annum.
